Registered sex offenders face numerous barriers to finding stable housing when they return to the community from jail or prison. Improved housing stability reduces the likelihood of recidivism and makes it easier for registered sex offenders to comply with the terms of their parole or probation.

However, creating transitional and permanent housing solutions for registered sex offenders often faces substantial push-back from communities, making it difficult to fund and operate these housing programs.

In this webinar, presenters:

  • Review the latest findings on the relationship between improved housing stability and reduced recidivism for registered sex offenders;
  • Share stories from two communities that have found effective solutions to housing registered sex offenders; and
  • Discuss the numerous barriers to developing housing options for registered sex offenders and strategies for overcoming them.

Panelists:

  • Kurt Bumby, PhD, Senior Associate, Center for Effective Public Policy, Center for Sex Offender Management
  • Paul Solomon, Executive Director, Sponsors, Inc. Eugene, Oregon
  • Liz Whitmore, Housing Coordinator, Vermont Department of Corrections
  • Derek Miodownik, Restorative and Community Justice Executive, Vermont Department of Corrections

Moderator:

  • Lahiz Tavarez, Policy Analyst, The Council of State Governments Justice Center
